Wonder Bikes XR1200
Jason Wonder’s Rev-2 was one of my favorite Harley customs last year. It was also a big hit with Chris Ronan of design company RD2, so Chris commissioned Jason to build a sequel. And here it is, but this time based on an XR1200 rather than a V-Rod. It’s also 120 lbs lighter than a stock XR1200. ‘My goal was to simplify the bike and bring back the attitude of the real Harley XR race bikes,’ says Jason Wonder. So he started by taking off the fuel injection system: ‘We wanted a hot rod with zero dead spots. So we went with an XR Carb conversion, and ditched the 25 lb harness and throttle bodies.’ The new ignition system is fully programmable, and gives the motor a serious jolt of extra power (and responsiveness). The bodywork is custom fabricated, including the tank, tail and seat unit: it’s not a million miles away from the lines of the stock bike, but it looks a million times better. The sinuous exhaust system has been remodeled to terminate in a Yoshimura muffler, and the top tree is also custom-made. Clip-ons and race controls add the finishing touch. I don’t know what the performance figures are, but I bet this XR will lift the front wheel at will.
